8 out of 10 Euro from the Department of Transport and Public Works Budget to transform the Basque Railway Network and extend Bilbao's tube

2009 is one of the key years in the high-speed railway in the three Basque capitals. The Department for Transport and Public Works of the Basque Government will have a total amount of 900.7 million Euro of which 517.62 million Euro will be deducted from the tax contribution in order to finance the Basque Y section bound to run through Gipuzkoa, once having paid to the Spanish Administration. The decision was announced at the Basque Parliament by the Deputy Head of the Transport Department of the Basque Government, Iñaki Betolaza, at the presentation of the 2009 budget dependent of the department headed by Nuria López de Guereñu.

Besides, the Ministry of Public Works will set aside 406 million Euro for the Basque Autonomous Region by 2009, of which 220 million Euro will be reserved for the line between Vitoria-Gasteiz and Bilbao of the New Basque Railway Network. The total budget to be allocated to the structure amounts to 292 million Euro, a quantity that contemplates the high-speed railway and the 72 million Euro expected to invest in the ordinary railway network.

As for the rest of the budget, the Basque Government will reserve 140,383,821 Euro for investment funds in the railway, 77,421,021 Euro in Bilbao's tube and 87,510,514 Euro in Transport Planning. What is more, the Basque Government will set aside 31.4 million Euro -not discounted from the tax contribution- for the draft of construction projects, building construction supervision and parallel proceedings.

Iñaki Betolaza recalled that before long the Basque Government will submit tender applications for four sections between Ezkio-Itsaso and Tolosa, which will be as follows: Beasain este (east Beasain), Beasain oeste (west Beasain), Legorreta and Tolosa. In addition, he announced that the remaining stretches -belonging to the central area- will be tendered in 2009, as well as Bergara - Ezkio-Itsaso section and construction works between Tolosa and Hernani will also start by then. In short, 12 of the 18 sections in Gipuzkoa will be in the course of contract awarding by 2009.
