Basque Govt approves joint venture to build tube line 3 with the regional council of Bizkaia

12/05/2008

The Basque Government has decided to give green light to the joint venture with the regional council of Bizkaia in order to build and finance construction works to connect the areas of Etxebarri and Matiko. The project means an investment of 153.5 million Euro and both institutions will undertake half of the financing each in five annuities.

Euskal Trenbide Sarea (Basque Railway Network, ETS) is the body responsible for implementing the drafting, the technical assistance and the construction of the project.

Line 3 will provide commuters with train connections every 5 minutes between San Antonio station in Etxebarri and Bilbao's Matiko borough, which will enable over 71,000 citizens to have a tube station less than 10 minutes from their homes.

The route will cover a distance of 5,885 metres and 7 stations in all (San Antonio, Otxarkoaga, Txurdinaga, Zurbaranbarri, Casco Viejo, Uribarri and Matiko). The tube connection is due to take place in Casco Viejo, where the passengers will switch to another coach to get to their final destination. Leaving Casco Viejo station behind, line 3 will extend up to Uribarri and Matiko neighbourhoods.

The new project connects Zumalakarregi (nowadays in operation) and Uribarri (included in the first drawing of line 3 project) stations in a unique underground terminus below Uribarri neighbourhood.

Besides, the section between San Antonio (Etxebarri) and Txurdinaga will not undergo important variations regarding the original project. Etxebarri station will be constructed in the open air, whereas Otxarkoaga and Txurdinaga stations will be located underground.
