Zumarraga to feature an intermodal station by 2011
12/04/2009
The works to build the intermodal station will 'conclude by 2011' announced yesterday Mikel Serrano, Mayor of Zumarraga. The statement came after signing with the Minister of Housing, Public Works and Transport of the Basque Government Iñaki Arriola, a collaboration agreement between the Town Council and the Basque Government.
The station, whose works are already under way, will enable the passengers on the bus, train or arriving the place by car to connect with the train.
With a budget of 4,689,000 Euro of which the Basque Government will pay one million, 400,000 Euro will be paid by the Regional Council of Gipuzkoa and the rest by the Town Council.
The station will be situated in the place where the current car park is, opposite the Renfe station. There, a two-storey underground car park is expected to be built with a total number of 218 parking spaces. In addition, a bus parking covered with a marquee will be fitted out at grade in front of the railway station, as well as a complementary halt for urban buses.
The works will conclude with the construction of another car park at grade, a taxi stop and a cycle lane parallel to a road crossing the whole area. There will also be a park to hold several events and the pedestrianisation of the surroundings of the former Urola Station will also be carried out.
Minister Iñaki Arriola stressed his department's aim to boost the construction of intermodal stations for passengers in order to encourage the use of collective transports.
