The Hospital - La Casilla stretch of the Bilbao Tram has started operation after the culmination of the test phase by the tram operator of the Basque Government Public Agency of the Department of Housing, Public Works and Transport, EuskoTren, on the 11th.

This new 700-metre stretch and two new stops have been built by the Basque Government through the public Basque Rail Network agency (Euskal Trenbide Sarea), in close collaboration with the Bilbao City Council. The extension of the route to La Casilla has been funded in 65% by the Basque Government and in 35% by the Bilbao City Council.

With this new stretch, the name of the existing stop next to the Basurto Hospital will change to Hospital.Meanwhile, the new stretch includes new stops at the entrance to Autonomía (Basurto) and at Plaza de La Casilla (La Casilla).

The tram will run along the centre of the road through Montevideo and Autonomía, sharing a platform and side stops with the Bilbobus city buses at the Basurto stop.

The regular Bilbao Tram service between Atxuri and La Casilla will run every 10 minutes for hours of greater passenger travel, at peak times on working days, and Saturday afternoons except holidays. The frequency will be every 15 minutes at other times.Furthermore, the offer is reinforced with special services on Athletic match days at San Mamés, during the Aste Nagusia festivities in Bilbao, and the day of Santo Tomás.
