The first Donostialdea Metro canopy, in Intxaurrondo
08/17/2012
The first Donostialdea Metro canopy, designed by the Norwegian firm Snohetta, will be erected permanently next week at the Montes Francos entrance to the Intxaurrondo station.
The entire production process has been carried out in the Basque Country. Due to the sheer size of the canopy, its transfer to Intxaurrondo has required the use of six trailers (one of which was categorised as "special transport"). The canopy was assembled as part of the same project and will be placed in its permanent location with the help of heavy cranes.
It is hoped that the canopy will become a city icon and that people will use it to identify the Metro. It is constructed on a three-dimensional coral marine structure made from stainless steel, its upper surface coated in a glass sheet. This lights up in such a way that, at night, it resembles the array of fauna that inhabit the depths of the sea.
