Economic benefits
The Basque Y itself and its resultant effects will involve an economic development for the Basque Country. Apart from the direct employment it will create, about 6,900 new jobs, the new railway network will provoke an annual increase of 1.30% in the GDP.
Environmental benefits
Every transport infrastructure provokes some damage in the environment. Nevertheless, the new railway network affects much less than any other means of transport (especially transport by road), since less ground is needed and, in this case, it travels mainly by a tunnel. Furthermore, the train does not carry out pollutant emissions to the atmosphere; in fact, it is the only means of transport able to work efficiently just through electric energy, only source of energy created from renewable energies.
Social benefits
Beyond the advantages the creation of the high-speed network will entail for those people and companies using directly its transport services, the Basque Y will have positive consequences for the whole country. An effective railway system will mean less cars on the roads, a reduction in the time spent in travelling from town to town, the consolidation of a public transport system and the organisation of the territory around a sustainable mobility.
